Forgiving my father and seeing more than his shadow side allowed me to recognize and embrace the pleasant parts of myself that resemble him. This forgiveness revealed a piece of my identity I was seeking. Understanding that everyone has both pleasant and less pleasant traits helped me see that others’ opinions don’t define me. Just like my opinion about my father didn’t define him. Some traits may be less visible than others at certain moments. Some situations may bring out the best or the worst in others. By viewing my father (both parents) as human, I started finding peace within myself. I’m growing step by step, despite the overwelming growing pain I sometimes feel. Today I know my father is proud of me.
