🦢🏾

When I look at my feet, I sometimes think of something a mother of a childhood friend once told me – that it’s important to take care of your feet because they carry you. That’s why I decided to apply this advice today, which I heard more than 20 years ago. I combine this advice with guidance from another childhood friend’s mother.

She told me how she kept her hands soft and decided to make a scrub with what I already had at home for my hands and feet. Decided to also take a foot bath. I often take my feet for granted, while they carry me. I want to appreciate them more, acknowledge my feet that support me.

Since my grieving ritual, I’ve been restoring my relationship with food and my mother (because that’s how she showed her loved, mainly through her food), mothers and women in general, and motherhood. When I eat food that brings back fond childhood memories, such as tutu, I feel like a ‘yu di KΓ²rsou’; I was born in CuraΓ§ao and obtained Dutch nationality. I was raised with both Antillean and Dutch norms and values. I grew up in the Netherlands, and Dutch mothers have also cared for meπŸ‘§πŸΎ. That’s why I feel both Antillean and Dutch, and I intend to take more care of my feet🦢🏾.
