Quality Time: Xmas Edition

Describe your ideal Xmas.

Spending time with familyβ€”whether by blood or chosen β€”or simply enjoying an intimate, cozy, and familiar atmosphere filled with food, music, and stories. Dancing, singing, and reflecting on connections.

Oh, and hot chocolate. Cookies and cake. And maybe just a bit more meat. Heartwarming Xmas movies and shows.

In therapy, I’ve started working on how to experience this kind of safe and joyful atmosphere within myself. Each year, I’m learning to cultivate this energy and warmth more and more during Xmas. Now that I have created a physically safe space at home, that feeling has grown exponentially in a short amount of time. Step by step, I’m opening myself up to the world with unspoken questions. Do I feel seen by you? Are you family? Are you home? With whom can I feel this sense of home the longest? Just exploring those thoughts is already a big step. For me, this sense of β€œhome” is essential to an ideal Xmas. While I might be curious about spontaneous outings and soaking in the festive atmosphere outdoors, my ideal Xmas is mostly intimate, familiar, and cozy. Extensive Xmas decorations and all the bells and whistles would be nice at homeβ€”like icing on the cake. But for now, buying decorations comes second to priorities like furniture, carpeting, curtains, andβ€”last but not leastβ€”a larger fridge. So Xmas decor is a bit lower on the list this year, but still a cherry on top for an ideal Xmas!
